A bit of lefty drama on the course Friday - Bubba Watson swearing at Steve Elkington, the tournament director having to play peacemaker in the scoring tent - but no, unfortunately, there was no Happy Gilmore vs. Bob Barker moment on the course.
Here’s the story, as far as I can tell – Bubba believed that Elkington and his caddie were walking in front of his line and making noise during his putting. On the 10th hole, Watson lost it and lobbed a few f-bombs at Elkington, according to Shigeki Maruyama, the third pro in the threesome. And yes, tv microphones did pick up Watson saying, “Steve can kiss my ass.” Apparently there’s talk that Watson may be fined for the profanity.
At the end of the round Elkington refused to shake Watson’s caddie’s hand, and in the scoring tent, tournament director Arvin Ginn was called into the tent to calm things down. The story is fleshed out a bit here.
Later Watson made nice and apologized to everyone, trying to downplay the incident. At the post-round press conference: “I want to apologize everybody in the tournament, everybody in the - whoever heard it, whoever saw it, especially Steve and Shigeki and their caddies. You know, I don’t drink or smoke, but every once in a while I get a little angry, and I said some stuff I probably shouldn’t have said.” Here’s the whole transcript.
Well, that’s it. Just passing along the lefty news…
